Garden Design Principles

  • Plants as Design Elements

  • Color

  • Shape, Texture, Size, and Scale

  • Creating Structure

  • Mixing Plants

  • Edgings, Hedges, and Ground Covers

  • Planning for Year-Round Interest

Landscape designers refer to the "hardscape" and the "softscape." The hardscape, as it sounds, consists of components such as gazebos, paths, statuary, and decks. The softscape refers to the plants. Usually the hardscape is established before the plants are put in place.

The same principles that apply to designing a room in your home apply to designing a garden, and the same elements are important: color, texture, shape, scale, and function.

Probably the best and most enjoyable way to learn about garden design is to immerse yourself in good examples. Look at the pictures in books written by successful garden designers. Visit public and private gardens. Notice the things that please you and why.

If possible, live with your site as it is for a full year before you begin your garden plan. Take photographs and make sketches. Study the weather and the light patterns. Notice how people use the site now—the paths they naturally take to and from the house, the garage, the street, the trash cans. Don't rush. Above all, avoid the temptation to run to the local garden center for a lot of pretty plants, then come home and decide where to put them. Careful planning can make the difference between a garden that delights the senses and a jumble of vegetation.
